A Multi-Year Relocation-to-Return Tax Journey
Situation
An NRI client engaged us not for a single transaction, but for ongoing guidance across the full arc of relocating abroad, living as a non-resident for several years, and eventually planning a return to India, each phase carrying different obligations.
Approach
We advised the client year to year: on initial departure and residency status, on structuring NRE/NRO accounts and Indian investments while abroad, and eventually on timing the return to maximize RNOR benefit, alongside annual compliance and DTAA positions.
Outcome
Across the multi-year engagement, the client avoided double taxation at every stage and returned to India with a well-planned RNOR window, an estimated ₹40 to 50 lakh in cumulative tax saved or deferred through consistent, year-over-year planning rather than one-off fixes.
