Returning from UAE: Timing the Move for Two Extra Years of RNOR

+2 years of RNOR status

Situation

A client was planning to return to India permanently after 15 years in the UAE, with meaningful overseas investment income. Without careful planning around the return date, the client would have become a full Resident earlier than necessary, losing the more favorable RNOR tax status sooner.

Approach

We reviewed the client's travel history and days-in-India pattern over preceding years, modeled how the exact timing of the return date would affect the RNOR window under the applicable residency rules, and advised on the optimal date to relocate.

Outcome

By timing the move precisely, the client secured two additional years of RNOR status, keeping an estimated ₹50 to 60 lakh of overseas investment income outside the Indian tax net during that window, roughly ₹15 to 18 lakh in India tax avoided or deferred.
